AnthioGen’s creation was inspired by Colorado cancer patients, Barbara Jean Spence and Bill Buckley. They were patients of Dr. Samir Witta and Dr. Kevin Schewe, and both had experienced a loved one having cancer prior to their own diagnoses. Although each had their own unique story and history as cancer patients, Barbara and Bill shared a common understanding of the fears and challenges of cancer and a desire to help others facing this diagnosis.
Through the courage and commitment both Barbara and Bill showed through their treatment, they led Dr. Witta to a deeper understanding of cancer from a patient perspective and inspired him to explore ways to address some of the greatest concerns and needs of those undergoing cancer treatment. It was from this that the idea of AnthioGen was born.
When Barbara Jean Spence passed away in 2006, her daughter Jayme expressed Barbara’s wish to support and advance the work of AnthioGen. At this time, Bill Buckley, an attorney, committed his support and energy to help the organization get off the ground. Dr. Witta’s colleagues, Dr. Kevin Schewe and J. Nicholas Napoli, joined forces with the group and in 2007 AnthioGen was born.
The word “AnthioGen” is derived from the ancient city of Antioch, a place that represents the birth of faith. Our name symbolizes our devotion and belief in hope for every patient we have the privilege to work with in our community.
